Breaking News: Elevation matters when it comes to climate change, deforestation and species survival - News Paper

Gambar
University of Toronto student George Sandler was shocked to see the rainforest floor suddenly come to life around him, as if in a scene from an Indiana Jones movie. This is an Anolis olssoni lizard [Credit: Luke Mahler] "The forest floor started rustling around me," says Sandler, "as dozens of crabs emerged from holes and crevices. Some were huge, the size of dinner plates. I even spotted a hermit crab climbing up a tree, lugging its heavy shell along with it." But Sandler wasn't in the field to study crabs. He was in the Dominican Republic to take a census of the region's Anolis lizard species for a study on the effects of deforestation being conducted by researchers Luke Mahler, Luke Frishkoff and collaborators. In the Caribbean nation, deforestation is the main form of natural habitat loss as residents cut down rainforest in order to produce charcoal, as well as create pastures for livestock and farmland for crops. It is no surprise that ...

Breaking News: Old stars live longer than we thought - News Paper

Gambar
Towards the end of their lives some 95% of stars evolve into red giants which lose their mass via a "stellar wind". Eventually they end up as planetary nebulae, ionized gas with a central hot star, a white dwarf. Thanks to new observations from the ALMA telescope in Chile, it became clear that the stellar wind of this red giant forms a spiral. This is an indirect indication that the star is not alone, but part of a binary star [Credit: ALMA (ESO/NAOJ/NRAO)/L. Decin et al. 2019] Researchers form 14 European scientific institutions, among them the IAC, have detected the existence of a binary interaction which had not been noticed by the scientific community. This new research offers an alternative explanation to the high rates of mass loss which it was thought were present towards the end of the lives of the most massive giant stars. The study, which is published in the journal Nature Astronomy , show that these stars lose mass at a much slower rate than prev...

Breaking News: Species evolve ways to back up life's machinery - News Paper

Gambar
Scientists have learned a lot about evolution by studying fossils, by observing nature and, more recently, by unraveling the genetic code stored in DNA. Understanding the interactome – the network of all protein interactions for a species – could shed light on how organisms adapt [Credit: Shuoshu / iStock] Now, a team of Stanford computer scientists and biologists has looked at evolution through a new lens, by analyzing how proteins – the biological machines produced by DNA – evolve to sustain the network of molecular interactions upon which all life depends. The scientists studied 1,840 species – from bacteria to primates – to understand how evolution built life forms that could survive in the face of natural adversities. What they discovered was profound yet intuitive: Every species has evolved backup plans that allow its protein machinery to find bypasses and workarounds when nature tries to gum up the works. No previous study has ever surveyed such a broad swath of ...

Breaking News: Trump absolves Kim Jong Un of responsibility for Otto Warmbier’s death - News Paper

Gambar
“He tells me that he didn’t know about it and I will take him at his word.” During President Donald Trump’s summit-ending news conference in Vietnam on Thursday, a reporter asked him if he’d confronted North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un about the treatment of Otto Warmbier, an American student who was imprisoned in North Korea for 15 months, only to return to the US in a comatose state in June 2017 and never recover. The reporter noted that despite Warmbier’s brutal death, Trump has called Kim “ my friend ” and repeatedly boasted about their “great relationship.” The journalist then asked him, “Have you in Singapore [during the first Trump-Kim summit] or here confronted Kim Jong Un about Otto Warmbier’s death, asked him to take responsibility, and what did he say to you?” Trump confirmed that he had — but went on to say he takes Kim’s word for it that he had nothing to do with it. “I really believe something very bad happened to [Warmbier], and I don’t think that the top leadershi...

Breaking News: Canadian Regime Change Crisis UPDATE: A Tragicomedy in Many Parts - News Paper

Gambar
Comedy and Tragedy Theatrical Masks on Wood Background The world politely averts its eyes while Canada self-immolates . Just returned from visiting with family on Vancouver Island.  I was away from my computer for several days and unable to read or post on the 24/7 media frenzy that has been taking place in Ottawa over the T rudeau A ttempted Obstruction of Justice Sca ndal. This morning I wanted to see how the rest of the world viewed the scandal. The best report I could find was from Iran's PressTV . It focused on Opposition Leader Andrew Scheer's shocking grabbing of the headlines Wednesday afternoon when he publicly called for Trudeau's resignation. The United States' media, in particular, is ignoring the scandal...so immersed as it is [and always is] in plucking out the lint from its own bellybutton.  The interminable and relentless efforts by the Ziofacist entities that run USrael have reached a crescendo [or nadir] of their own with some testimony by ...

Breaking News: Why the answers Michael Cohen gave to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s questions mattered - News Paper

Gambar
AOC got Cohen to name names — and help build a case for getting Trump’s tax returns. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ’s (D-NY) questioning of Michael Cohen during his congressional testimony before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday, February 27, didn’t produce the type of fireworks the first-term Democrat is sometimes known for. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t significant: Ocasio-Cortez got President Donald Trump’s former lawyer to name names for future lines of inquiry, and she also made progress on furthering the Democrats’ case for seeking out Trump’s tax returns . The New York Democrat followed up on questions asked by her House colleagues and asked Cohen to identify specific individuals who might have more information. She asked who might know about the “treasure trove” of documents in the office of David Pecker, chairman and CEO of National Enquirer parent company American Media Inc. and a Trump ally who has been involved in “catch and kill” schemes tied to the presid...

Breaking News: What Michael Cohen’s testimony means for the Russia investigation - News Paper

Gambar
Cohen offered intriguing new information — but he clearly hasn’t made Mueller’s case. During his House testimony Wednesday, Michael Cohen offered new details about several matters of importance to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation — but said he knew of no direct evidence that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia. Cohen described Trump’s efforts to mislead the American public about Russia-related matters, and said that he has “suspicions” about whether collusion took place. He said Trump’s personal lawyer Jay Sekulow had reviewed and edited Cohen’s false testimony to Congress about Trump Tower Moscow. He claimed he heard Roger Stone tell Trump, on speakerphone, that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange told him he’d soon release emails that would hurt Hillary Clinton’s campaign. He said that during the campaign, he saw Don Jr. furtively tell his father that he’d set up a meeting. He thinks this may have been the infamous meeting with a Russian lawyer , but he says he ...

Breaking News: Evers WI budget 3 R's: Repair, and Republican Rejection - News Paper

Gambar
I'm thinking that Wisconsin teacher-turned-Governor Evers' first budget handed to legislators tonight will be ignored by a roomful of students where more than half are OK with their D's and F's. Democrat's and discerning viewers, however, will use the presentation as it's intended: a road map to what needs repair or a fresh start - - after eight years of Scott Walker ideological, intentional and neglect - - from the roads to health care to education to clean water to basic tax and redistricting fairness. And you will see the Republican legislative leadership's instant 'no, never'  already displayed by GOP shadow governor and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and no doubt practiced in front of the mirror so often today that he's risking lockjaw. For Vos & Co., their likely one-note reply has a repetitive one-size-fits-all origin story: the less money they collect in taxes from their corporate donors, the more business-sector donations flow into GO...

Ukraine rejects Donbass Republics’ “spring ceasefire” proposal – Nikonorova Donetsk, Feb 28 – DAN. Ukraine took an ‘unconstructive position’ at the Minsk talks rejecting the Donetsk and Lugansk’s proposal to introduce a “spring ceasefire,” Donetsk People’s Republic envoy to the Contact Group, DPR Foreign Minister Natalia Nikonorova said after the Donbass talks in the Belarussian capital on Thursday. “Regrettably, the Ukrainian representatives did not support the proposal to introduce the “spring ceasefire” in the runup to the holidays,” Nikonorova said. “Absolute politicizing and hiding the main point of introducing and observing the ceasefire is the favourite tactic of Ukrainian negotiators.” Kiev failed to offer any acceptable argument for preventing the recommitment to ceasefire in the region, she added. Also, the Ukrainian representatives were trying to convince the participants that this dialogue should only be conducted in the run up to Easter. “Thanks to joint effor...
