Charge it up: New Maps features for electric vehicles

Gambar
Electric vehicles (EVs) are growing in popularity. Still, planning a road trip with charge stops on route can feel like solving a puzzle. With an EV, you need to find recharging stations within range that also have your specific plug type and can recharge you as quickly as you need.  To take the guesswork out of trip planning and recharging, we’re rolling out three new features for EVs with Google Maps built in. Taking the stress out of EV route planning Newly developed routing algorithms that use a type of math called graph theory serve up stress-free routes and charging stop recommendations in the latest release of Google Maps that’s built into participating EVs, including the Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 Recharge.  Now when you enter a destination that requires two or more recharge stops, algorithms in Maps will search and filter through tens to thousands of public charging stations to find the most efficient route — all in less than 10 seconds. You can see how long...

Preparing our partners for Apple’s iOS 14 policy updates

Apple’s upcoming App Tracking Transparency (ATT) policy will require developers to ask for permission when they use certain information from other companies’ apps and websites for advertising purposes, even if they already have user consent. Today we’re sharing how Google is helping our community prepare, as we know that developers and advertisers in the iOS ecosystem are still figuring out how to adapt. Preparing your app for iOS 14 Apple's ATT changes will reduce visibility into key metrics that show how ads drive conversions (like app installs and sales) and will affect how advertisers value and bid on ad impressions. As such, app publishers may see a significant impact to their Google ad revenue on iOS after Apple’s ATT policies take effect. To help improve iOS monetization rates, we encourage developers to upgrade to version 7.64 of the Google Mobile Ads SDK for new features like SKAdNetwork support.  Learn more about how app publishers can prepare. GSEC Dublin: A content responsibility center for Europe

Protecting people from harmful content and making our products safer for everyone is core to the work of many different teams across Google and YouTube. When it comes to the content on our platforms, we have a responsibility to safeguard the people and businesses using our products, and to do so with clear, transparent policies and processes. Today, we’re announcing our second Google Safety Engineering Center (GSEC) —and our first focused on content responsibility—to be located in our European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. Our first GSEC opened in Munich in 2019 and builds tools to protect users’ privacy and security. The new Dublin center will be a regional hub for Google experts working to tackle the spread of illegal and harmful content and a place where we can share this work with policymakers, researchers, and regulators. Dublin is already a hub for our Trust and Safety teams in the region, comprising many different policy experts, specialists and engineers working ...

How newsrooms can build new audiences through video

For the past year, I’ve led VidSpark , a Google News Initiative partnership with The Poynter Institute helping local news publishers bolster their social media video strategy. Our work aims to help newsrooms better connect with Gen Z viewers in order to maintain their relevance well into the future. We’ve worked with three local newsrooms: GBH News , The Star Tribune and 10 Tampa Bay . These publishers have broken out of their traditional formats to spin up new social-first video series that include Gen Z voices and speak to important issues in ways that resonate with younger audiences. The three newsrooms produced a total of 98 videos through the program, publishing across YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. I know the importance of adapting your message to social platforms in order to reach an audience. I’ve launched social-first shows with PolitiFact and PBS Digital Studios , and am also a YouTuber myself . In coaching these newsrooms, I found three lessons to be the most salient....

Google Taiwan turns 15 with a new engineering hub

As a Taiwanese and an engineer, it's extremely heartwarming to see how Taiwan has grown to be a critical hub for global innovation and hardware manufacturing. Not everyone knows that Taiwan has contributed to the development of many Google products, including Pixel phones, Nest devices, Chromebooks, and Chromecast.  We first opened our Taipei 101 office in 2006 with just one employee. Today, we have offices across six cities in Taiwan, and our workforce has grown ten times in the last five years. We plan to keep the momentum going in order to build helpful products for Taiwan and the world.  Today, on Google’s 15th anniversary in Taiwan, and the third anniversary of bringing in the HTC family (including myself!), I’d like to share the five things I’m excited about as we look to the future of Google in Taiwan.  1. New spaces for our teams to innovate in: We first shared our plans to build a new engineering hub in New Taipei City, an emerging hub for innovation, in 201...

Web Stories, not Web Teasers

Gambar
We've seen amazing momentum from web creators trying their first steps with Web Stories . With more adoption comes more content exploration, guidance and questions, and it’s still early days for Web Stories, so we’re all figuring things out together as a community. Web creators around the world are figuring out how Web Stories complement their portfolio, and one particular thing we've seen folks try out is teaser content: Web Stories that are essentially advertisements for some other content, like a blog post or full-length video. Unfortunately, from what users are telling us, this isn't what they want. Instead Web Stories are best when they tell a full story and aren’t used to “tease” other content. Readers don’t like to feel forced to click through to a connected blog post to finish reading. While Web Stories can help grow traffic to your domain and raise your visibility, they likely will not work as a pure acquisition channel where users have to click through to co...

Sign in to sites faster and personalize your lock screen

Gambar
We’re always finding ways to make using Chromebooks as seamless as possible. Today, with our latest Chrome OS release, we’re introducing a faster sign-in experience as well as personalized lock screens.  And in case you missed it, we’ll share the exciting new Chromebooks that were recently announced at CES 2021. Faster and easier web sign-in Forget the hassle of typing in a long password or trying to remember which one you use for a specific online account. Now you can securely sign in to websites with the PIN or fingerprint you’ve set up to unlock your Chromebook with our new Web Authentication (WebAuthn) feature. Websites that support WebAuthn will let you use your Chromebook PIN or fingerprint ID—if your Chromebook has a fingerprint reader—instead of the password you’ve set for the website. And if you use 2-Step Verification to sign-in, your Chromebook PIN or fingerprint ID can be used as the second factor, so you no longer need to pull out your security key or phone to au...
