Breaking News: After increases in 2015 and 2016, America’s violent crime rate seems to be back on the decline - News Paper

A new FBI report has some good news on crime. Rates of crime, violent crime, and murder all dropped across America during the first half of 2018, according to a preliminary report from the FBI released this week. The FBI report, which draws on data from more than 14,000 of the US’s roughly 18,000 law enforcement agencies, found the violent crime rate dropped by 4.3 percent, the murder rate by 6.7 percent, and the property crime rate by 7.2 percent. The drops in crime occurred nearly across the board, although cities with 25,000 to 49,999 people and nonmetropolitan counties saw increases in the murder rate. The findings suggest that crime in America is continuing its long-term decline since the 1990s, despite apparently temporary upticks in violent crime and murder that concerned criminologists in 2015 and 2016. Crime rates also fell in 2017 , according to the FBI . The FBI’s report isn’t the first to suggest that crime rates headed in the right direction in 2018. A previous repor...

Breaking News: Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to be indicted on bribery charges pending hearing - News Paper

The announcement comes less than two months before Israel’s elections. In a long-awaited decision, Israel’s Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit announced on Thursday that he intends to officially charge Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu with crimes, the beginning of a process that could eventually force him to step down from his position. The attorney general plans to indict the prime minister on bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, charges that relate to three different corruption cases, pending a hearing, the Israeli news outlet Haaretz reported . Israeli police recommended three times last year that Netanyahu be indicted on corruption charges — so Mandelblit’s decision didn’t come as a complete surprise. But it’s still pretty bad timing for the prime minister. Israeli elections are coming up on April 9, and Netanyahu is running for a fourth term. His conservative Likud party is also just a few seats away from losing its grip on power, and the indictment could ti...

In a move that drastically shakes up Israeli politics less than six weeks before general elections, Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit decided Thursday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be charged with criminal wrongdoing in three separate cases against him, including bribery in the far-reaching Bezeq corruption probe, pending a hearing. The decision marks the first time in Israel’s history that a serving prime minister has been told he faces criminal charges, and casts a heavy shadow over Netanyahu’s re-election campaign. “This is hugely significant — for the prime minister and for all of us,” said Suzie Navot, a professor of constitutional and parliamentary law. “This was an investigation conducted with caution, with restraint — some would say too much restraint, over too long. The evidence was checked and re-checked.” The attorney general knew full well how dramatic would be the political fallout, she said. “And yet the decision was taken to indict, in all three cases....

In Vietnam, the president responds to his former lawyer’s testimony by mischaracterizing it. During his summit-ending news conference in Vietnam on Thursday morning, President Donald Trump was asked to respond to his longtime former lawyer and fixer accusing him of crimes during his congressional testimony on Wednesday related to hush payments to women before the 2016 election . “Your former lawyer Michael Cohen, who worked for you for 10 years, his office right next to yours, right by yours at Trump Tower — he called you a liar, a con man, a racist,” ABC’s Jonathan Karl said. “What’s your response to Michael Cohen?” Trump responded by mischaracterizing Cohen’s testimony. Here’s the full text of what he said: Well, it’s incorrect, and you know, it’s very interesting because I tried to watch as much as I could. I wasn’t able to watch too much because I’ve been a little bit busy. But I think having a fake hearing like that and having it in the middle of this important summit is rea...
